Nuneaton Old Edwardians have made some dramatic changes to their coaching set up this week!
Following detailed discussions at the weekend, the Executive Committee decided on a change of direction for the playing structure at the club. Following this decision Chris Foxton, Eds Chairman, contacted his long standing friend Marcos Ayerza to seek advice. The Argentine and Leicester Tigers Prop suggested current Tigers No 8 Locky McCaffrey might be interested in a new challenge.
After agreement was reached between McCaffrey and Eds Director Of Rugby Steve Savage the Tigers star is due to take his first training session at Weddington next Tuesday 19th July at 7.30pm. He will hopefully form a strong bond with our captain, Phil King and vice captain, Ryan Hatch.
Lachlan Patrick McCaffrey hails from Sydney Australia and started his professional rugby career with the Waratahs before moving to Western Force and then the Brumbies. Seeking to widen his rugby experience he moved to the UK in 2014 joining London Welsh for their first season in the Premiership. After they were unsuccessful in their bid to stay in the top flight of English rugby, McCaffrey was quickly snapped up by Richard Cockerill. In his first season at Welford Road he has proved to be one of the Tigers stand out players.
Eds DOR Steve Savage said, ‘This is a real coup for the Eds. Locky has played at the highest level of club rugby in the world’s two best leagues, The Premership and Super Rugby. He will bring a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to Nuneaton Old Edwardians and our young, talented side will benefit hugely from his input.’
Locky will be taking training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the club then review the games via video links. He will also attend all of the Eds games that do not coincide with the Tigers Premiership matches. Steve added that the Eds would be delighted to welcome any new young players with ambition to improve their rugby and he feels Locky will prove a real inspiration to them.
The Old Eds would like to offer their sincere thanks to outgoing coach Andy Savage for his considerable efforts over the last two seasons. Also thanks to 1st XV manager Shaun Garnham who retired from his role in May. The club sends best wishes for the future to them both.
