A collection of sentiments about Tim Bates who was much loved by the many many people who new him as a team mate and friend:
"For my own thoughts off the cuff I remember Tim as a very talented and thoughtful player. He was able to perform well in any position in the backs and read the game well. His inpdividual skills were excellent but best of all he could change a game with that extra special ability to read the situation and play " heads up rugby". He was just as thoughtful off the pitch and conversations in the clubhouse were always interesting. Like most rugby players that I know he was very sociable and enjoyed the company of his drinking mates at Weddington with both the Eds and the the cricket club. I am personally glad to count him as a friend and he will be sorely missed by us all."
Gren Perry former President, Treasurer and Chairman at the Old Eds.
"I went through the mini and junior age groups with Tim at Nuneaton RFC. When we left Higham Lane school in the summer of 1987, the Eds were starting up a colts team, Tim came to the summer training sessions, but come September decided to stay with the Nuns colts. Tim re-joined the Eds in the 1998-99 season enjoying 4 seasons in the 1st XV primarily at fullback and occasionally at fly-half. This period holds some of my fondest Old Eds playing memories; with Tim at fullback and me on the wing, he always made his tackles, his lines of running were always spot on and he was brilliant at drawing the last man, setting me up countless times for an unopposed run to the try line. He was never bothered about scoring himself, the assist was the thing, he just wanted to play good rugby.
From 2004 onwards injuries reduced his appearances to occasional run outs in the 3rds or Vets. Tim played his final game for the Eds in 2010 when he finally hung up his rugger boots. If anything, Tim enjoyed the social aspect of rugby more than the playing side, he was a regular at all social events and went on a number of rugby tours, he was always good fun and up for a laugh."
Sean Krauth, former Higham Lane Schoolmate, Old Eds' teammate and personal friend to Tim.
"Tim was well known and loved by all who new him: at Higham Lane School; the Nuns': Minis, Juniors, Colts and Seniors; the Old Eds and Nuneaton Cricket Club; an unselfish individual with sport in his blood and talent to match. Tim played at the Nuns' M&Js from Under 8s through to under 16s, for Nuneaton Schools Under 15s and Under 16s Rugby in 1986/7, for the Nuns' Colts, Nuns' Colts 7s, Nuns' Senior sides, Nuneaton Cricket Club and for the Old Eds playing 92 games and scoring 256 points. Truly a sporting legend! RIP Tim."
