ANDY SAVAGE, the new rugby coach at Nuneaton Old Eds, has spelled out his plans as preparations for the new season begin to take shape.
Savage, the former Coventry and Nuneaton scrum-half, who has previous coaching experience with the Nuns and Leicester Lions, said: “I have no magic wand to wave. I see it as being a three-year project.
It takes a season for players to gel with a new coach.”"
“I’m not making any promises about aiming to achieve promotion immediately. I aim to get the players on the right wavelength with shared targets.
“I want the players to understand my aims in different areas of the pitch and how to implement them and the object is to inspire them to enjoy themselves while they are training.
“We are holding a players meeting at the end of June, where we will look at bringing in structures to encourage them to train and then we will hold the first session on the pitch on July 1.
“I want to see training essentially skill-based and in game situations, not just running up and down the pitch.”
A meet-the-coach evening will be held on Thursday, June 26, at 7.30pm and all players already with the club or those who would like to play for it are welcome at Weddington.
Shaun Garnham will assist Andy and team manager and he has emphasised that one area he will be aiming to improve is the regular availability of players.
He said: “I’ve known Andy since we were junior players together and look forward to working with him.”
Andy’s brother Steve, a former Old Eds captain who went on to become a top referee after his playing days were over, has returned to the club to help in preparations.
Steve has proposed that this coming season the club should support the new mayor of Nuneaton and Bedworth, Coun Brian Hawkes, in his chosen charity, the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.
Steve said: “It is a vital service and one that could benefit rugby players in the event of serious injury.”
