Organised by logistics supremo Briso, Eds Vets returned to Eccles RFC for their famous beer festival.Drawing on his vast experience as Operations Manager for an international company, Briso managed to scramble a party of 13,only 7 being fit to play, and got us to the venue only an hour after the kick off time. Eccles the ever gracious hosts honoured the fixture and provided several players to bolster the visiting team.
Farmer Dave, not intending play, but aware of the Eds predicament, produced a pair of hobnailed boots and proudly wore the Eds shirt for the first time. Not having played for 20 years, he soon imposed himself and got two rows of spuds in the dead ball area before half time.
His master, Lord Luke, shamed by his understaff, felt obliged to take the field, and gave the oily northeners a thoroughly good hiding.
Eccles soon took advantage of Eds dazzling lack of pace, and quickly scored two tries out wide, both converted. This stunned the visitors into action, and they managed to hold off any further scores before half time.
Soon into the second half the pressure of the passive scrums got to Arnold, who had to retire with a swollen groin...........not for the first time!
Cox made a trade mark 6 inch drive, and Dereck, took the chance to put some pride back into Scottish Rugby, by dotting over the line for a converted try.Shortly after Tej, picked up from the scrum, sidestepped the 64 year old defenders zimmer frame to equal the score. Eccles responded with flowing back play and again scored out wide. Eds not wanting to lose their unbeaten record pressed hard, and a kind Eccles guest scored under the posts to level the score 19 all. Eccles again brilliant hosts, great club, next year looks a certainty.
