AEI Rugby 10
Old Eds Second XV 17
WITH the Eds pitch unplayable due to heavy rain, this game was switched to AEI.
The map provided by me from their website was utterly useless, as they had moved, but eventually we all arrived safe and sound.
I say we, as the team included, Sean Krauth, H Singh, Nick Arnold, Greg Way's brother and Callum Tucker for his first game for a year. In addition thanks to H Singh and Josh Mallard, Marcus Holt, whose game was called off at the Nuns, played scrum-half.
The game seldom reached any great heights but those moments that did were very good. The Eds failure at the breakdown was their undoing, as was the referee, an ex-front row man, who substituted his own interpretation of the Laws, so that most offences which should have attracted a free kick, resulted in yet another scrum, which did suit the home side somewhat.
Of the good bits, a switch between Greg Way and Simon Blackmore saw the latter pick an excellent line to score a try under the posts, which was converted by Way. A little later, finding some space, Duncan Parkinson turned on the afterburners to score a good unconverted try.
At half-time Eds led 12-0.
The second half started in a promising manner and a simple backs move saw young Sean Krauth score an unconverted try.
Eds were well on top and were moving the ball around well but several chances were wasted by the final pass going to ground.
After this the game slipped into mediocrity and, with increasing, confidence AEI pressed the Eds line and deservedly scored two unconverted tries to make the final score 17-10 to the visitors.
Although the game was largely forgettable, a big thanks must go to the lads mentioned in this report.
It was good to see the father and son H and Ryan Singh playing together, until H pulled his hamstring trying to keep up with his youngster, whose play was a bright note on a rather dull day.
