Nuneaton Old Eds 24
Oadby Wyggestonians 10
AN entertaining if stop-start friendly saw Eds come back from a 10-5 half-time deficit to record a comfortable win in this friendly game at Weddington Road.
Strict application of the maul laws by the referee resulted in Eds conceding far too many penalties for comfort but their superior levels of skills and fitness eventually saw them home.
Eds coach Kevin Venus declared himself well pleased with the effort, which saw him making full use of his 22-man squad as changes came at frequent intervals.
He said: “It was a good performance considering all the changes we made and it gave us a chance to look at players who are not getting a lot of game time.
“Defensively we played well against the best set of backs we have played against in the last six months of rugby.
“I was well pleased with the effort and performance and overall it was a satisfying afternoon.”
Eds were 5-0 up inside the first minute when they won a line-out near the Oadby line and drove over for a try to flanker Stuart Holes. Scum-half Tom Burdett missed the conversion and any thoughts of it becoming a stroll for Eds were quickly dispelled when the visitors hit back with a converted try on five minutes.
Oadby, who had lost both opening games in their Midlands 2 East programme, had a lively set of backs and made good use of the breeze to pin Eds in their own half and increased their lead to 10-5 with a penalty after 20 minutes.
And that is how it stayed until half-time despite both sides looking keen to run the ball, with sound defences holding out.
Twelve minutes after the break Eds prop Adam Wilson rounded off a move wide out with an unconverted try to level the scores and three minutes later Holes got his second from the base of a scrum near the Oadby line and replacement back Craig Quick made it 17-10.
Both sides continued to run the ball well and after 26 minutes Holes barged over again in the corner and Quick converted magnificently to end the scoring.
Oadby spent some time battering the Eds line for long periods but the defence held out – at the expense of a late yellow card for Quick for one home infringement too many.
On Saturday Eds are away to Leamington in a league match and will be looking to improve on the narrow Warwickshire Cup victory they achieved there at the end of August.
