Hello Monk, I have to call you that becauise that is how I remember you.
I'm into family history these days and looking for anything on my most ancient ancestor , a Samuel Bloxham, from the 1650s, I was amazed to find reference to a Sam Bloxham playing one match for NOE in 1956!!!!!! Then I remembered we played a match in Oxford on the way back from the tour to Bournemouth !!!!!!
Cue for a few hours of nostalgia!!!!!!! I remember Monk and Hayes party pieces, Pete Galliford, Mick Williams and of course Tup Moore. They were good days. Do you still play the Old Sils for the "trophy of unusual design" as the local paper called it.
Of the Old Sils on that first tour, Roy Letts and Fred Moon have died. Barrie Swift and Bob Young and the venerable Claude Coton are still around and I have seen them recently at an "over 60s lunch"
Please remember me to any that are still around
best wishes
Sam Bloxham

Sam,
How nice to hear from you. I have just seen your message. Unfortunately I am getting ready to go and watch the Eds play at Leamington so I don't have time to reply properly before I leave.
There are definitely happy memories to exchange so keep looking as I will come back to you shortly.
Monk

Hi Sam, There you are standing next to the referee who was Harry Pateman. In the Sils team I can spot Pete Suckling on the back row and the trio of Claude Coton, Fred Moon and Bob Young on the front row. This photo is circa 1957-8 or 1958-59. I can name all of the Eds team and I can recognise more faces in the Sils side but can you add any more names to them? I will bring you up to date on some of the other names that you mention but I thought that this might be a nice way to kick things off. Cheers, Monk

Hi Monk Thanks for the photo. I'll print it off and take it to the next lunch I get to.
It isn't me next to the ref! it is Dave Powell. Its a first team photo and I didn't often reach those dizzy heights!!!!!!
The OS players are as far as I can remember:-
front row John Cooper on Claude's knee. ( john died last year). Fred Moon ( died 5 years or so ago) . Bob Young, Tony Goldwater and Pete Suckling
middle row Dave Powell, ? : ? ; ?, Roger Butler
back row I think Rex Dufty (next to ref): Barrie Richards: ? , Dave ? (head just showing; Tony Goldwater and Peter Suckling.
I caught up with Claude, Bob Young, Dave Powell, Tony Goldwater and Pete Suckling at the last "over 60s lunch)
Stuart Sanders also comes to the lunches.
I have a photo of the group outside the Barley Mow in Solihull as we set off for Polzeath. It was there I shared a double bed with Claude!!!!! and came away physically unscarred!!!!! don't know about mentally. I can see you on it. I can't remember how many other OEs came then.
One of the things I remember was coming to one of your annual dinners at the Conservative club. I think they only served mild or the beer wasn't too good so Roy Letts went across the road and got a bucket full of bitter which we had under the table!!!
As I don't drive now I don't get across to the Old Sils ground so don't see them playing. I was never much of a watcher I much preferred to play. I now live in Kenilworth. With the league system do you get to play there. In our day they were all "friendlies!!!!!!!" or at least most of the time.
remember me to any of "our" generation
Best wishes
Sam

Hi Sam, Sorry about identfying Dave Powell as you. I remember Dave and should have looked more closely in the first place. He, is I think, younger than you..? I knew of the deaths that you mention apart from John Cooper which is news that I am sad to hear. In your original posting you mentioned a few names from the past. I am happy to report that Peter Galliford is alive and kicking and although I have not heard from him for some time I presume that Mick Williams is the same. Sadly however Tut Moore died in August 1987 and Bill Hays died two years ago in France. There is a posting about Bill on page 3 of this message board. We do still compete for "The Bog Seat" and life is made easy because we currently play in the same league. We won it back last season but the Sils promptly recovered it this season so the battle will be rejoined anew next season. However the merriment we enjoyed between all clubs has sadly been unavoidably diluted firstly by the breathalyser and then the leagues. The breathalyser for obvious reasons and leagues because the opposition are constantly changing teams and faces. Lets face it what fun is there in making 150 mile return trips to places as far afield as Hereford etc. just for two points and not eight pints. We were fortunate to enjoy the wild side of rugby when we did but the changes may account for some of us still being alive and kicking when we may not have been..... We do not play Kenilworth at the moment because they are in a different league. Incidentally Dave Pettifor lives in Kenilworth but I think that although I played alonside him regularly he may have been in the next wave of players as you came towards retirement. The 1957 tour to Polzeath brings back many great memories and I would certainly enjoy seeing the photogaph of the party assembled outside the Barley Mow as I have no photos of that trip myself. Bill hays and myself were kindly hosted by Claude but unlike yourself we did not share a double bed with him. The ten Old Eds who went on that tour were: Non Players: Tut Moore, Don Smith and John Dillam. Players: Peter Galliford, Mick Williams, myself, Bill Hays, Dennis Cooke, Tony Betney and Brian Collins. I particularly remember contributing to the purchase of a signed rugby ball to commemorate one of Claude's many retirements which of course did not happen on this occasion. Also Peter Galliford careering around on Polzeath beach in his Bob Gerrard tuned Morris 1000 and frightening the hell out of Claude, Fred Moon and Roy Letts in the process. Finally I can remember living dangerously when winding up the barman up as he called time in the hotel. " Wee'm aaandled bigrrr fish 'n yooo my son" he said. How was I to know that he was the current all in heavyweight wrestling champion of Cornwall. Still my brains always did fly out of he window after a few beers. There were of course many other moments and characters to remember but they can stay in what's left of the little grey cells for now......... Cheers, Gren

Hi Monk Sorry for the delay in replying. I have at last found the photo in the archives (a couple of boxes stored in the loft!!!!) So far I haven't managed to put it on the reply. The "insert image" won't work for me!!!
I was at the Sils over 60s lunch yesterday. Claude sends his regards. He has had a fall and broken his pelvis, but he managed to get there and was enjoying himself. I copied the photo you sent and caused quite a bit of interest. I don't think the OS have an archive. I'll have another try at inserting the photo.

Hi Sam,
Sorry to hear about Claude's fall but glad hthat he could make the reunion. Born survivor....!
Thanks for going to so much trouble to find the photo from your attic. Putting images on this message board is awkward because they need to be already on the web somewhere. There is then a procedure to follow but as your picture is not on the web I will email you and you can then send it directly to me so that I can do the necessary.
Cheers,
Gren

Thank you for the photo Sam. As you know there were 10 Old Eds on this tour but I am the only one visible on this photograph. For the benefit of any Old Eds wondering I am in the centre between the player with the clip board and the one with stars on his sweater. Cheers, Gren
