I have been in touch with Bob Battrick who kindly sent me this digital photograph taken from an original picture which is behind glass. The picture is one of his father in law Jim Startin taken when he got his England Schools Cap in the 1934-35 season. Jim was 17 at the time and was first choice fly half against Wales. I am aware of quite a few old Eds who have been selected for England schools since that time and possibly this could be the subject for another email? However I do have strong personal memories of Tony Betney being selected as first choice open side for the same fixture and venue 20 years later. There are several pictures pre and post war that I have already posted which include Jim and then after leaving Nuneaton he went on to be President of Long Eaton RFC. Sadly Bob tells me that he died six years ago and also that his wife Mary died last year. Many of you will remember Bob from his playing days at the Eds in the 70's and his father Bill Battrick who was a past captain of Nuneaton Cricket Club 2nd XI. He is now living on the other side of Nottingham and is keeping well. I understand that his son, Jim's grandson Richard Battrick Lt. Commander RN, plays at No. 8 for United Services Portsmouth and has captained them quite recently. He would be delighted to play in any representative game against the Eds. Selectors take note.
